MOT Testing
KJL Motors is approved by the Government appointed Vehicle Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and has MOT testing facilities for Class 4 vehicles; this includes Cars, Motor Caravans, Goods vehicles up to 3000KG gross weight and Minibuses (with no more than 12 passenger seats). All MOT tests are completed by MOT testers nominated by VOSA.
As of 2006 the MOT test applies to most road vehicles over 3 years old. It is illegal to drive a non-exempt vehicle that requires a test on public roads without a current MOT.
Now you can arrange an MOT test and have it completed up to one month before the expiry of your MOT.
Why not service your car at KJL Motors at the same time as your MOT? With trained technicians, the latest diagnostic equipment, guaranteed parts and labour - why pay more elsewhere?
Servicing
Recent changes to European Legislations mean that independent garages can now carry out maintenance on your car without invalidating your vehicles warranty.
At KJL Motors servicing will be carried out to the manufacturer's service schedule using parts that match the quality of the manufacturer’s original equipment. We'll stamp your service book too, to ensure your vehicle's service history is maintained.
If your car has incomplete service history and you are unsure where to start, there is no need to worry; we will pinpoint the exact requirements to keep the cost to a minimum.
Essential and safety checks
Our customers benefit from the following checks being included with their Service:
- Lights
- Windscreen wipers and washers
- Battery charge and condition
- Exhaust mountings and condition
- Tyre tread and pressure check
Fluid top-ups
The following essential fluids will be checked and if required will be topped up:
- Brake fluid
- Windscreen washer fluid
- Power steering fluid
Timing Belts
Timing belts with any tensioners, rollers etc. should always be replaced at manufacturers recommenced intervals, otherwise extensive damage can occur to the engine.
If you are unsure as to when the manufacturers recommended change time is for your vehicle, we will be pleased to advise you.
Batteries
We offer a comprehensive battery service including a FREE battery and alternator check.
We fit a wide range of vehicle batteries; this includes car, light commercial vehicles and leisure batteries. All unwanted batteries are disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.
Most batteries now require no regular maintenance. However we do recommend battery checks are carried out on a regular basis.
Checking the condition of your car battery and battery charging system is a service available at KJL Motors and takes around 5 minutes to complete.
This simple but effective test, which includes checking the charging system, voltage output and the charging rate of the battery will indicate whether a battery failure is imminent or not by comparing the test result against the manufacturer’s specification.
Using a simple red, amber, green traffic light system your battery check will provide a clear indication as to the condition of the battery in a digital display. So, if you have any concerns regarding the condition or health of your car battery then we recommend you have the battery and charging system checked as soon as possible.
Your car battery is the only power source used for getting your car started and faulty batteries are one of the main reasons for breakdown calls in the UK. Industry sources say that 1/10 vehicle batteries are poised to fail. So it is important that you maintain a good healthy battery if you are to avoid becoming a roadside ‘breakdown’ statistic.
Don’t get caught out in the cold this winter call in to KJL Motors for a battery check today.
Massive selection of batteries to fit cars and light commercial vehicles.

Exhausts
Your exhaust emissions system is the only means of channeling away those noxious fumes, like the environmentally destructive gas carbon monoxide, generated by your engine. An exhaust that has failed can lead to noxious fumes being drawn into the vehicle cabin and prolonged exposure to exhaust fumes can make a vehicle occupant feel drowsy, which could lead to an even greater danger.
A healthy exhaust system is critical if you are to maintain the health and welfare of the vehicle occupants, a quiet smooth running engine and optimum fuel efficiency. If you have any concerns regarding the health of your vehicles exhaust system then call in to KJL Motors today.
We will inspect the exhaust system and recommend the best solutions for economy now and value in the long term.
We can supply and fit any section of exhaust that you may require.
Wheel Alignment
It is very important that all four wheels of a car are aligned precisely, to the manufacturers' specific measurements. If one wheel is out of alignment by even a fraction, it can have an effect on your driving and on the life span of the tyre.
With all the speed ramps, bumps, and potholes on the road, it doesn't take a lot to knock a wheel out of alignment. Even just bumping your front wheels up on a kerb can knock their alignment out by a millimeter.
Wheel alignment is not only important for prolonging the life of your tyres, it also assists road holding. If your front wheels are pulling in slightly different directions when you try to turn a corner, your car may have a tendency to 'wander' across the road.
Rear wheels can also go out of alignment on modern cars. Older cars have a solid beam axle on the back, which makes it impossible for the rear wheels to become unaligned. But because of the independent suspension set-up on most new cars, it is also possible for the rear wheels to go out of position.
At KJL Motors we use four-wheel laser alignment for the most precise alignment possible. This precision ensures your car tracks properly on the road, and reduces wear on your tyres.
Air Conditioning
- An estimated 10% of Air-Con gas permeates from the system every year
- Air-Con systems need recharging with gas & lubricant every 2 years
Over 2/3 of vehicles are fitted with air conditioning and climate control systems as standard these days. Many of us are familiar with using air-con in our car on both hot and cold days, but not many people are aware that like other parts of your car, the air-conditioning system also needs regular attention to make sure it is working efficiently.
You may not be aware that over 10% of air-con gas permeates from the air-con system every year, which means that it may not work as well as it should. This is why car manufacturers recommend your Air-Con system is recharged with gas and lubricant every 2 years. This service is not part of routine vehicle servicing, so if your vehicle is more than 2 years old it’s probably due a recharge.
KJL Motors now offers a complete air conditioning recharge service. The process can also include a system de-bug to clear bacterial build up from within the system, which will remove any unpleasant odours.
Our trained technicians will show you the difference in your Air-Con system before and after recharge. Air-Con systems not fully recharged will be less effective and have to work harder putting more strain on the engine and using more fuel. If your Air-Con system has not been recharged in 2 years it will dramatically reduce efficiency.
During the hotter summer month’s motorist use the Air-Con system more; however your system is also useful in winter. Air-Con systems create dry warm air rather than the normal humid air from outside and this de-mists your car windscreen more quickly.
To keep your Air-Con system fully charged all year, why not call KJL Motors and have your vehicle’s air conditioning system recharged with gas and lubricant today.
Radiator Antifreeze/Coolant Service
The main functions of the Engine Cooling System are to carry heat away from the engine and maintain the correct operating temperature. The system accomplishes this by circulating antifreeze/coolant around the components where heat is generated and carrying it to the radiator to be cooled.
In the engine cooling system, an appropriate amount of an antifreeze/coolant and water mixture is necessary to help reduce the risk of the engine overheating and freezing. Another important feature of antifreeze/coolant is that it inhibits rust and corrosion in the cooling system.
Our service includes:
- visually checking the radiator and radiator hoses for leaks
- evacuating the old antifreeze/coolant
- refilling the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of antifreeze/coolant
Body Work
We can undertake minor body repairs such as dents, minor accident damage, bumper damage, scratches and mot welding; all of our work will be completed to the highest specification.
Engine Tuning
These days, tuning is done via computerised Electronic Control Units (ECUs), which constantly monitor and control the way engines and transmissions perform. ECUs automatically adjust engine timing and emissions by receiving signals from various sensors fitted around the engine and transmission. These sensors constantly monitor temperatures, engine and road speeds, exhaust gases, throttle positions, and pressures within the engine and send signals to various motors, actuators, and solenoids to regulate and adjust the engine and transmission components for optimum performance. This removes the need for manual tuning.
These systems are not without problems though and require the use of diagnostic equipment to identify any problems. Sometimes the systems get rogue signals and just require 'rebooting'.
We offer a cost effective and reliable way to increase your car’s power, torque and fuel efficiency by remapping the ECU. Please visit the ECU Remapping section for more information.
Of course, there are still older cars on the road which require tuning. A lot of technicians today are unfamiliar with components such as carburetors, as they do not exist in modern cars. But here are still a lot of cars out there which have these components. These regularly need to have points gapped and timings set manually. Also the vacuum advance and retard or the centrifugal advance and retard on the distributors of older engines must be checked regularly.
We understand what is required in both modern and older engines and are able to perform whatever tuning work is necessary.
ECU Remapping
We are now agents for custom ECU remapping expert’s wakeupyourcar.com. We offer a cost effective and reliable way to increase your car’s power, torque and fuel efficiency.
By remapping your cars ECU, typically you could get between 6 and 10 MPG extra, you could get better torque which helps your engine perform better at lower speeds, and you can gain better acceleration.
Better torque along with better acceleration improves driveability.
The performance gain that you could receive depends entirely on the type of engine that you have:
- Remapping a turbo diesel engine can give you between 30 and 40 extra BHP
- Remapping a turbo petrol engine can give you between 20 and 30 extra BHP
- Remapping a naturally aspirated petrol engine has the least amount of performance gain
Head Gaskets
Head Gaskets are a component that sits between and seals the main engine block to the cylinder head in your engine. This seal is critical and maintains a consistent operating pressure in the engine.
On occasions a head gasket may fail to maintain this pressure and as a result will leak. In an extreme instance the gasket may actually crack, break or blow. The aforementioned damage will result in decreased engine pressure and a loss of power. Exhaust fumes could leak to the coolant system, causing an increased rate of engine wear and overheating. If leaks continue to occur before repair, the exhaust may start to steam and your catalytic converter may be damaged.
If you are suffering a loss of power in your vehicle along with engine overheating, decreasing levels of engine coolant / engine oil or are experiencing excessive exhaust smoke and steam please contact us today where we can inspect and repair head gaskets before major engine damage may occur.
Rebuilding Engines
Cars of today don't seem to suffer the same faults as older models. At KJL Motors we have found we are not rebuilding engines or putting new parts in as often as we did in the past. One reason for this is the efficient design and build of modern engines. There have also been advances in the quality of motor oils, meaning engines stay cleaner and run more smoothly for longer.
But, of course, engines still do have problems. A lot of garages these days consider it too much trouble to strip an engine down. At KJL Motors we are happy to do this if it is necessary and will prolong the life of a car.
One particular problem we often come across is a cracked head gasket. This can occur when a leak in the cooling system causes the engine to overheat. In extreme cases the heat can make the head gasket crack. If this happens the engine must be stripped in order to repair this fault.
Also, some of the fuels available from supermarket petrol stations don't contain the additives that well-known branded fuels do. This makes the fuel cheaper but also means it is of a lower quality. The lack of additives can cause a build-up of carbon inside the engine, making it 'gum up' and affecting the engine's performance. This requires decoking of the engine, which means stripping the engine down, cleaning the carbon off of the valves, head, and combustion chambers, then rebuilding the engine, to make it run more efficiently.
Vehicle Recovery
We offer a vehicle recovery service for cars and light vans. Wherever possible, we repair the vehicle at the breakdown site, rather than recovering it back to the workshop. If we can get as much information as possible about the breakdown before we attend, we can normally bring the right sort of tools and equipment out to fix the vehicle on-site. We will only bring a vehicle back to the workshop if we feel it is absolutely necessary.
